Public Artwork Project - Sion Tomos Owen

Siôn Tomos Owen was born and raised first language Welsh in the Rhondda Valley. He has a string of awards and accolades to his name – Tudor Bevan Bursary Award in 2007, runner up in the Terry Hetherington Young Writers Competition in 2014 and 2013 for short fiction, Young Writer’s Prize in the Planet Essay Competition 2013 and much more.

He wears multiple hats that of a poet, fiction writer, essayist, short story writer, illustrator, and is a successfully published author, artist, singer, television & radio presenter. Cawl was published in 2016, and in 2018, Siôn won a scholarship from Literature Wales to develop a Welsh language graphic novel.

He presented "Pobol y Rhondda" for two series as well as the S4C programme "Cynefin". Siôn is also a regular guest on the S4C "Jonathan" programme. he lives in Treorchy with his wife and daughter, and enjoys eating, playing and laughing!

In 2018, Siôn's illustration of the town of Treorchy was featured in the centre pages of the inaugural Visit Treorchy publication. Such was the popularity of the work, that a large scale version was commissioned to adorn the interior walls of the popular central Treorchy public house The Lion during its recent refurbishment.

As part of RAFT 2019, Siôn's work will now be expanded to an even greater scale...

The site of the former Station Road Chapel, adjacent to the Park & Dare Theatre, is now an empty wasteground which has been largely unused since the chapel's demolition almost 20 years ago.

As part of RAFT 2019, Rhondda Arts Festival is now commissioning a grand scale print of
Siôn's work, which will become the basis of a public artwork, to be completed by the members of the general public in attendance on the closing weekend of RAFT, and then encapsulated, mounted and exhibited at a future date on the vacant Station Road site.

Siôn's artwork will be printed on a series of 25 metre panels, to be painted as part of the C-RAFT Family Fun Day at Treorchy Comprehensive School on Saturday June 29th. A list of all contributors will be compiled and published on the RAFT website.

Further information on the public art project - and how you can get involved! - will be published on the RAFT social media channels soon
