RAFT 2019 opened with two events marking the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings at Normandy, in June 1944.
To mark this historic occasion, RAFT promoted two performances featuring local performers together with guest performers from our twin town of Ravensburg, Germany - the 40 piece Jugendblasorchester Ravensburg.
Rhondda Cynon Taf has enjoyed a long friendship with Germany, and is twinned with three towns there. In 2018 we celebrated 50 years of twinning with Nürtingen, and 25 years of twinning with both Ravensburg, Wolfenbüttel and also Montélimar, France.
Our musical friendship with the Musikschule and Stadorchester of the town of Ravensburg date back just as long, and this visit of the Jugendblasorchester Ravensburg is the latest in a series of frequent exchange visits between both youth and adult groups from both nations.
As part of the D-Day 75 events, the young wind orchestra renewed their friendship with Rhondda's oldest instrumental ensemble, Porth's Lewis Merthyr Band, and also forged new friendships, meeting and performing in concert with a number of other youth and community groups from around the region, including Rhondda Sea Cadets, Treherbert & District Youth & Community Band and Tonyrefail School Choir.
These events were dedicated to the fallen of the Second World War and move toward us celebrating 75 years of peace between Germany and the United Kingdom at RAFT 2020.
